The Top 10 Social Media Stories of 2016

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to look back at what was 2016 and reflect how social media shaped it. From once popular live group chat applications to presidential elections, the last 12 months in social media look like stuff epic competitions are made of–the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! So between Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, and others which provided the top social media stories of 2016?  Which created the most buzz and had the biggest impact?

Before you answer that question watch as I breakdown my own top 10 list of the biggest social media stories of 2016 using Facebook Live. Undoubtedly, Facebook Live definitely made the list. On Facebook you can now join me every Friday at Noon ET for the “The Social Media Scene.”  It’s a weekly show highlighting social media news with a mix of entertainment and fun.

That said, mobile live streaming was and will continue to be one of the hottest trends in social media marketing.  Just think, in 2016 we witnessed a part of Congress using mobile live streaming to showcase the challenges of getting a gun control bill passed.  Talk about unexpected!

This year we also saw one of the saddest, but effective uses of mobile live streaming as a young Minnesota woman streamed the death of her boyfriend after being shot in their car by local police.  No reality show nor edited documentary gets more real than that!  Not even local news would probably broadcast something like that live! So proof of the power and reach of mobile live streaming really came into existence in 2016.

Now on a much lighter note, watch as I run down my top 10 social media stories of the past year, sans  co-host, media maven Chetachi Egu.  Then tell me what you think should have been included in my list or if you agree with chosen few.

Here’s a little preview listing  of the top five from my top 10 list in no particular order:

  • Facebook Live
  • Comedienne Leslie Jones
  • “Instastories” better known as Instagram stories
  • Meerkat
  • Viral Challenge

Can you guess what the other five are? Just watch the replay of today’s episode of “The Social Media Scene” for the answers!
